Energy Commissioner warns of deindustrialisation
The EU is running a serious risk of deindustrialisation, if current clean energy policies do not also focus on strengthening industrial activity, stressed Guenther Oettinger, European Commissioner for energy in an article published at German daily Handelsblatt.
According to Oettinger, the EU should agree on a fourth “20%” target on energy by 2020: a permanent goal of 20% industrial contribution to GDP. "We need a strategy for the re-industrialisation of Europe," Oettinger stated.
