Plans by the European Parliament to send a delegation of MEPs to the Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development (June 2012) are cancelled due to the high rates charged by the hotels in Rio.

"The huge increase in the estimated cost of attending the summit is simply not justifiable, especially at a time when many Europeans are faced with economic hardship," said Environment Committee Chairman Matthias Groote. Groote asked the Parliament to send a complaint to the secretary-general of the conference for not taking prompt action to lower travel and subsistence costs for the delegations.
