Sweeping changes in Greek land law

In a law on the privatisation of the national electricity and water utilities, the Greek Ministry of Finance introduced a series of provisions that further undermine land planning and management.

The new law, which was voted on 31 October 2012, specifically targets the coastal and riparian lands, with the aim of allowing the development of large-scale touristic complexes at a fast-track mode. The law also introduces the “touristic village” as a new planning category in Greek land law, which supersedes all specific planning provisions at the national or regional levels.
