2000MW nuclear power plant at Belene

On a rather positive note, the Government of Bulgaria announced that its plans to abandon the plans to construct a 2000MW nuclear power plant at Belene, due to the economic crisis.

Bulgaria enjoyed a dominant position in electricity production, until two decades ago. The state policy on nuclear power increased fears of a possible accident at the existing plant of Kozloduy, which has been listed as one of the world's "ten most dangerous reactors" by the United States Department of Energy. The Belene plant would have an initial cost of €3.9 bilion, which could well reach €5 billion.
